Verla M. Haverkamp, 85, of Sumner, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 26, 2012, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. A memorial fund will be established in her name.
Verla Mae Haverkamp, daughter of Edward and Erna Bartels Stahlhut, was born May 13, 1927, on the same farm as her father at Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized on June 5, 1927, and confirmed on March 29, 1942, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, and graduated from Sumner High School in 1945.
Verla was united in marriage with Erwin M. Haverkamp on November 18, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. The couple farmed for many years in the Sumner area and earned the Century Farm Award in 2002. Verla was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was also active in WELCA, the Quilting Circle. In addition to quilting, Verla enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking and gardening. She enjoyed her flowers immensely.
She is survived by four children, Dale (Marilyn) Haverkamp of rural Sumner, Iowa; Mary Lee (Shirley) Johnson of Big Spring, Kentucky; Gary (Betty) Haverkamp of Clive, Iowa; and Beth (John) Krogh of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Christa (Travis) Leach, Jared (Kara) Haverkamp, Ben Bice, Michelle (Lucas) Krajewski, Jill Haverkamp, Alison, Laura, Ryan and Logan Krogh; five step grandchildren, Brett Leach, Natasha Johnson, Felicia (Drew) Meadows, Madison Johnson, and Scott (Michelle) Kurtz; five great-grandchildren, Jordan, Justin and Jacob Leach, Liam Krajewski, and Jayden Haverkamp; four step great-grandchildren, Kamryn and Kayden Kurtz, Marshall Meadows, and Addison Johnson; a brother-in-law, Marvin (Marlys) Haverkamp of Grundy Center; and four sisters-in-law, Elaine (Cal) Meihost of Waterloo, Esther Meier of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Betty Lou (Paul) Schwake and Marlys Stahlhut, both of Tripoli.
Verla was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin, who died October 11, 2008; one daughter, Anne Marie, who died in infancy in 1952; her parents; two brothers, Melvin Stahlhut and Edward, Jr., who died in infancy.
